Why Falling Asleep is Like Growing Your Freelancing Biz

Once in a while I get in bed and I just can't sleep. Does that ever happen to you?

It's funny because I'm old enough to know right away when a night like that is coming. The instant I'm under the blanket I just get this feeling... "yup, it's going to be one of those nights where I'm not really tired."

And so it goes.

Does that ever happen to you?

(Yes there's something relevant to freelancing about this... have a little patience young Padawan.)

Now, when I was a younger dude I remember how much I would toss and turn, trying to find the perfect position or just to somehow "force" myself to relax. Those hours would stretch on and on and it was total torture.

But several years ago I realized I was never going to "push" myself into sleep. So these days I just immediately stop trying to sleep and start reading. I end up enjoying myself instead of struggling. And guess what... I usually fall asleep in 10 minutes instead of 5 hours.

The moral of my little fable is this: sometimes you need to stop trying to "force" your business to work. Now I'm not saying stop making an effort. You gotta make efforts in your business absolutely every day. But keep your eyes peeled for those times when the KIND of effort your making isn't working... and try another approach.

Try an approach that scares you. Try an approach that is a bit outside your comfort zone. Try an approach you've been meaning to try but just haven't gotten around to it.

As long as you stay focused on your goal but get resourceful and how to accomplish it, you may just be pleasantly surprised to discover just how easy your goal can be to achieve.
